In this day of digital cameras, a photo can be made of anything physical. In any family, there is a virtual treasure trove of various types of physical items. A list from the A. E. Garden family history will help with any family list.
Civil War enlistment and discharge papers. Photo of bullet taken from head of a Civil War veteran (who survived some 30 years). Indian stone axe found on ancestor’s farm. 1905-1910 birthday and greeting cards. Hand-made checkerboard. Photo of book authored by ancestor. Antique cedar chest and kitchen cabinet. Old cars – or horses. Old tools and cooking utensils. Marriage license. Tax receipts. Old maps corresponding to a time or place in a family history (many old maps can be found by Interest research).
Category 4 -- How Things Were Different “Back Then”
Older family members will respond to your general question, “How were things different back then?” A few variations to jog their memory are:
- How were Christmas and other holidays different back then?
- What are some things that no longer exist – skills, places, habits, old technology, daily routines, etc?
- Community services that no longer exist – doctor’s house calls, the 5 and 10 cent store, ice boxes, milk delivery, etc.
- Cultural differences back then – not locking doors, helping sick neighbors, importance of daily newspaper and radio, effects of a war, the depression, etc.
Category 5 – Additional Possibilities
A few items that do not fall neatly into the above categories:
- Time lines that follow important events in the life of an individual or a family (record a date and then write about the event opposite the date)
- “A Typical Day in the Life of ____________.” (Variations might include the housewife’s week of Monday washing, Tuesday ironing, Friday cleaning, Saturday baking, etc. or what the family typically did during the four seasons or did on vacations)
- Family mysteries – an example is, “Where did he get the money to go to medical school?” or “…to buy that farm?” or “Did he father an out-of-wedlock child?” – followed by speculation from older family members

The Pot Filler: Helpful, Innovative and Stylish

Like the kitchen faucet, a pot filler is a plumbing fixture designed to dispense water. Pot fillers, though, are designed to eliminate the trouble of carrying a pot full of water to the stovetop, prevent spillage and save your back, hands, arms and shoulders. With just a turn of a handle, water flows right to a pot on your stovetop.
A pot filler's versatility makes it more than just a luxury item. They come in two varieties (wall-mounted or deck-mounted), but one thing remains constant: it must be placed close enough to the stove top so that the folding arm can reach it.
Pot fillers are commonly made of brass, metal or stainless steel, and the handles are usually made of metal. Ceramic disc cartridges have replaced rubber washer gaskets. Some kitchens are capable of hosting a pot filler, while others are not so conducive. Mounting one will take some planning, especially if you're adding to existing plumbing. Either way, you'll want to plan with a contractor.
A pot filler may not be the kitchen's most popular fixture (yet), but its popularity has grown steadily. Ingenuity and ease of operation have made it one of the most attractive features in today's kitchen.

Copper and the Last Copper Cookware Maker
Hammersmith Corporation is the last surviving solid-copper cookware maker. Many famous restaurants patronize their products. Mauviel and Ruffoni are other brands of copper cookware.
When buying a set of cookware, a person will almost always consider the make of the items he is about to get. The materials used are a big factor that affects the durability of the item.
There are many kinds of materials now being used in manufacturing modern cookware. There's aluminum, steel, hard plastic and iron. Yet one of the oldest and still one of the more durable material is copper.
Copper has long been used in the olden days. Although quite rudimentary, the characteristics of copper can not be discounted. Copper is a very good conductor of heat. This alone makes it a top contender in cookware production. It can more easily cook food this way.
Copper is ductile. This means that it can be easily shaped or hammered to thin sheets. Thus, working with copper is not that difficult. It will be easy to shape spoons, forks, pans and pots.
Copper cookwares are definitely durable and long lasting. It can be for keeps for a very long time especially with proper care and maintenance.
However, copper cookware is not that popular anymore as other makes surfaced in the market. Today, it is quite difficult to look for cookware made of copper. But one company still believes in the efficiency of copper and continues to manufacture copper cookware. And that's Hammersmith Corporation.
Hammersmith Corporation is the last surviving solid copper cookware maker in the United States. The owner, Jeffrey Herkes, proudly emphasized that they only have a total of 12 employees making these serving and cookware pieces, with either silver or tin linings. Aside from this, they also re-tin copper cookware.
They get their supply of C11000 or copper from Revere Copper Products, Inc. For professional cookware, the copper material they use ranges from .090 up to .125 inches thick. Their home cookware ranges from .064 up to .080 inches thick. Many restaurants patronize Hammersmith products, like the New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
Hammersmith cookware is available in several Williams-Sonoma Stores. These are also available in New York, along downtown Manhattan's Bowery.
Most copper cookware sold in the US is made overseas. The ones manufactured in Korea have a varnish finish because it is only for display purposes. About 10 years ago, there were still several copper cookware manufacturers. At current, the sole survivor is Hammersmith.
Mauviel Cuprinox Cookware is made from 2.5mm external copper. Its interiors are made from stainless steel. Its handles are from sturdy cast iron material.
Ruffoni Italian Copper Cookware is used to cook pastries. It features exceptional conductivity, and distributes heat evenly.
Although it might be difficult to find, Hammersmith perpetuates kitchen items made of copper. If you must, buy one copper kitchen utensil and compare it with your existing items in the kitchen. After all, side by side comparison is one of the best ways to see which one is really better.
The only imaginable setback with copper is its high tendency to rust and corrode. When this happens, it can contaminate food and might cause illnesses. But this is easily counteracted by lining it with stainless steel. This way, the cookware maintains the pleasant characteristics of copper even if it is not seen.

Induction Cooking? What are the Advantages and Disadvantages?
While induction cooking has been popular in Europe and Australia for a number of years, this technology is just beginning to become popular in the United States. What is induction cooking? It is often referred to as heatless cooking because it does not require an open gas flame or red-hot electric coils. Instead, heat is generated by electromagnetic currents in the burners that respond to metal cooking pots and pans.
When you cook on an induction cooktop, only the pan and food contained within it become hot. As soon as the pot or pan is removed from the burner, the cooktop surface becomes almost cool to the touch.
Advantages of Induction Cooking
Efficiency. The biggest difference between induction cooking and other methods is where the heat is actually generated. Gas and electric stovetops produce heat on a burner. This heat is then transferred to a cooking pan and then its contents. In contrast, induction stove tops generate heat in the vessel. There is no transfer from the burner to the pan. Thus there is virtually no wasted heat. According to studies, induction cooking is about 90% efficient, compared to electric and gas cooking that have 47% and 40% energy efficiency rating respectively.
Safety. Safety is a major selling point. With induction cooking, the burners stay cool (room temperature), eliminating the worry of burning your hands, using hot pads, or dangerous fumes being admitted into the air.
Time-saving. Induction cooktops achieve extremely high temperatures in a short period of time. During the cooking process, any adjustments to the heat are precise and almost instantaneous. Gas heat is fairly precise as well, but it takes longer for the burners to heat the pan to the initial temperature.
Comfort. Induction burners won’t heat up your kitchen. This appeals to chefs, caterers, and even home cooks.
Convenience. Food spills and boil-overs aren't burned on to the stove and are easily wiped off. Most stove-tops are either easy-to-clean glass or ceramic. In addition, you can leave the pot on the burner after cooking without having to worry about excess heat burning your food.
Drawbacks of Induction Cooking
Cost. Typically, induction cookware is more expensive than gas or electric ranges, often starting at about $1,500. If you cooked with gas prior to switching to induction, you may need to rewire your kitchen to accommodate the 240 volts required for most induction cooktops.
Special cookware. For your pan to conduct energy, it must be magnetic. Induction can heat food only through pans made of steel or iron. You can test your cookware to see if it is compatible by passing a magnet across the pan. If the magnet sticks to the pan, the pan will work. Not all stainless steel cookware is compatible with induction cooking.
Availability. Induction cooking in the United States is still a relatively new concept. Therefore, induction ranges are not as widely available as their gas and electric counterparts. As the demand for induction cooktops increases, prices should begin to fall.
